Lynch

Lynch died on April 12, 1881, at the Michigan State Prison at Jackson, where he was held. According to the Juniata Sentinel and Republican, he and three other prisoners tried to escape by placing ladders against the prison wall. A guard shot him three times as he reached the top of the wall, and he fell dead. The other men were recaptured after a brief resistance.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff. The account says a guard shot Lynch three times as he reached the top of the prison wall during an escape attempt.
