Luis Gonzalez was a man his mother, Sue Gonzalez, remembers as very sweet, someone who would give you the shirt off his back. He had type 1 diabetes, and his mother says that while he was held at the Oklahoma County jail in December 2022 he called her from the medical floor to say his blood sugar was low and asked for money on his account to buy snacks. Jail staff said they found him unresponsive during a welfare check, and fire responders pronounced him dead at 9:58 p.m. Records cited by The Frontier list complications of diabetes as the cause of death. His mother's lawsuit against Oklahoma County and TK Health alleges he was not given adequate medical care, including a hospital trip, and the county and TK Health deny the allegations and have asked the court to dismiss the case.
