Ludwig Kehr
Ludwig Kehr was held in the Oconto jail in Wisconsin in May 1871, after a shooting at a hall in the town on the evening of May 30. Officials ordered him moved to the Brown County jail because they considered the Oconto jail insecure, but a crowd blocked the transfer and he remained in Oconto. According to the Oconto correspondent of a Green Bay newspaper, at dusk on a later night a crowd led by the victim's father broke into the jail, dragged Mr. Kehr through the streets and hanged him. The Tribune report did not say whether the jailer resisted the crowd, gave up the keys or handed him over.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The Oconto correspondent of the Green Bay newspaper reports that a crowd led by the victim's father broke into the Oconto jail, dragged Kehr through the streets and hanged him.
