Died in jail or a lockup
Louis Moreno
Louis Moreno was held in the Siskiyou County jail at Yreka, California, when a mob broke into the jail and took him from his cell in the early morning of August 26, 1895. The crowd hanged him along with other men it had seized that night. One account says the deputy sheriff opened the jail doors while the under-sheriff refused to give up the keys, and another says the crowd cut off the sheriff's response with a sham fight and a muffled fire bell. Some accounts place the hanging in the courthouse square, and the papers differ on the hour.
