Louis Jung Jr.

50 years old · died November 6, 2023 · Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania

Louis Jung Jr., 50, had type 1 diabetes and was the father of three sons. His son Jacob said he taught him to work on cars and fix houses, and his ex-wife Evelyn Tyson said he loved his family and the holidays. He died on November 6, 2023, at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in Philadelphia, where he was held in the custody of the Philadelphia Department of Prisons. His sons' lawsuit says staff did not consistently give him insulin or check his blood glucose, that he was hospitalized several times with diabetic ketoacidosis, and that he received no insulin in his last six days. In March 2026 a federal jury found the city and two officials liable and awarded the family more than $1.5 million in compensatory damages and $170,000 in punitive damages, and the city said it was reviewing the verdict. The prisons department reported his death to state records as natural causes.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed; neglect alleged). The Philadelphia Department of Prisons reported the death as natural, while his sons' lawsuit says staff did not give him insulin or check his glucose and ignored signs of diabetic ketoacidosis, and a federal jury later found the city and a lieutenant violated his right to medical care.

Reported by: Philadelphia Department of Prisons (the agency that held him); Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency; his sons, in their federal lawsuit (family or their lawyers); federal jury.

Lawsuit: His sons sued the City of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Department of Prisons and the jail's health care provider over his death, and a federal jury awarded the family more than $1.5 million in compensatory damages and $170,000 in punitive damages, which the city said it was reviewing. Court record: JUNG v. CITY OF PHILADELPHIA (E.D. Pa., 2024).
