Louis Fano

27 years old · died February 5, 2017 · East Baton Rouge Parish Jail, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana

Louis Jonathan Fano was a onetime veterinary student who wrote letters to his mother in longhand, and he lived with bipolar disorder and symptoms of schizophrenia. He was held at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison in Baton Rouge, where, according to Warden Dennis Grimes and jail records reported by Reuters, he was found hanging in his cell on February 2, 2017, and died three days later in hospital. The warden and jail records gave the cause of death as suicide. His family says his antipsychotic medication was stopped after the jail switched to a new private medical contractor, and that the jail did not keep the monitoring checks required for people on suicide watch. His mother visits his grave every week.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). Warden Dennis Grimes and jail records say Fano hanged himself, but his family says the jail did not keep the monitoring checks required for inmates on suicide watch, and his family's lawsuit challenges the account after his antipsychotic medication was stopped under the new private medical contractor.

Reported by: Warden Dennis Grimes and jail records, as reported by Reuters (the agency that held him); his family; Incarceration Transparency.
