Loris Higgins

died August 26, 1907 · Douglas County Correctional Center, Douglas County, Nebraska

Loris Higgins became deeply religious after his arrest and took part in every religious service held at the Douglas County jail in Omaha, Nebraska. The prison evangelist Elizabeth R. Wheaton, who held a service with him there on the morning he was taken, described him as a young victim of mob law. On August 26, 1907, the Thurston County sheriff came to Omaha to take him by train toward Bancroft, and about twenty men seized him on the journey, put him on a dray and hanged him from a tree. Accounts differ on the sheriff's part: one says he handed Higgins over, while another says the masked men overpowered him.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. Newspaper accounts say about twenty men seized him from the Thurston County sheriff on a train near Bancroft and hanged him from a tree.

Reported by: The Beatrice Daily Express (reporters); Courier Democrat (Omaha dispatch) (reporters); The Madison Daily Leader (Omaha dispatch) (reporters).
