Lisa Michelle Courtney
Lisa Michelle Courtney, 33, died in December 2019 while held at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County. According to her family, in July 2019 she was beaten by other people held at the facility and by a guard, and she later asked for hospital care but was given Maalox and returned to her cell. Rankin County Coroner David Ruth said she was found unresponsive in her cell on a Thursday morning in December, and the facility listed her cause of death as a perforated stomach ulcer. Her family, through their attorney, disputes that account and is seeking accountability for the attack and the denial of medical care.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed; neglect alleged). The facility listed the cause as a perforated stomach ulcer, while her family's attorney says other inmates and a guard beat her in July and that staff gave her Maalox and returned her to her cell after she begged for hospital care.
Reported by: Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (the agency that held her); her family, through their attorney (family or their lawyers).
