Linn

died August 9, 1864 · Lyon County, Nevada

Linn was held in the jail at Dayton, Nevada Territory, in August 1864. According to the Gold Hill Daily News, which relied on a telegram received by Marshal Arnold, about 3 a.m. on August 9 a crowd of men went to the jail, demanded the keys, took him out and hanged him. The paper first reported that he had killed himself in the jail, then corrected that account. The article says the crowd returned his body to the cell and acted so quietly that the town was not alarmed.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). The Gold Hill Daily News first reported suicide in the jail, then corrected this, saying a crowd demanded the keys, took Linn from the jail and hanged him, and that the body was returned to the cell.

Reported by: Gold Hill Daily News, citing a telegram received by Marshal Arnold (reporters).
