Executed
Lewis Williams
According to the Wilmington Journal, as reprinted by The Evening Telegraph, Lewis Williams was hanged on December 21, 1866, at a place of execution in the suburbs after being taken from the jail. The Rev. J. C. Thomas attended him and the other man executed with him, offering consolation and hope for their souls. The paper reported that Williams protested his innocence from the scaffold, as did the other man, and that a large crowd of white and Black people attended. The report said he died almost instantly, with scarcely a struggle.
