Lewis Radford
Lewis Radford, a Black man, was held in the jail at Guthrie, Kentucky, in January 1904. A mob of thirty to forty men broke into the jail corridor, struck the man the marshal had hired to feed prisoners, and demanded the keys to Radford's cell, which were handed over. The mob fired several shots into the cell, dragged Radford to a tree near the jail door and hanged him. One account says he was probably already dead from the gunshot wounds before he was hanged, and authorities cut his body down within an hour.
