26 years old · died February 22, 2018 · Charles B. Webster Detention Center, Richmond County, Georgia

Lendon Stephens Jr., 26, was a father who cut grass for a local landscaper and wanted to get back to work and to his young son, whom he called from jail; friends called him L-Jay. He died in February 2018 in his cell at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center in Augusta, Georgia, five days after that last phone call, according to the autopsy report. Jail records show deputies treated his complaints of headaches and a seizure-like episode as faking, and the autopsy report ruled his death a homicide from bleeding on the brain caused by a head injury. The Richmond County Sheriff's Office and GBI investigators said he was not shot or stabbed and that the medical examiner's determination was pending, while his family says they have received no information about how he died.
