Lee Green
Lee Green, a Black man, was held in the jail at Linden, Texas, in October 1891. According to a Fort Worth Gazette dispatch, a crowd of armed men came to the jail on October 20 while the sheriff was away with a posse, and the sheriff's wife handed over the keys; one dispatch said she was forced to, while a later account said she gave them up after persuasion. The men took Green from the jail to a farm, where he was chained to a tree and burned to death before a crowd estimated at 500 to 1,000 people. A Picayune's Queen City correspondent, reprinted in the New Orleans Picayune, dated the killing to October 26 and described the jail keys being returned to the sheriff's wife after the men left.
