Died in jail or a lockup
Lee Gibson
Lee Gibson, also recorded as Lego Gibson, was a Black man. Newspaper accounts from 1892 give his age as about twenty, though one account gave it as about seventy. According to one report, his only request while held at the Owenton jail in Kentucky, to see his mother, was denied. Accounts say a mob of about fifty masked men came to the jail on the night of January 27 or 28, 1892, took him out and hanged him. One report says the sheriff was at the jail when the men arrived, and another says no prosecution of the mob members was likely.
