Died in jail or a lockup
Leander Nelson
Leander Nelson, a Black man, was held in the jail at Magnolia, Louisiana, in 1886. The Semi-Weekly Interior Journal reports that an armed mob broke open the jail, took him out and hanged him from a bridge near the town. The Macon Beacon says he and another man, John Nelson, were taken from the jail and hanged together by the same mob. Neither account says whether the jail's officers resisted the mob, gave up the keys or handed the men over.
