Lawrence Russell Brewer
Lawrence Russell Brewer, 44, was executed by the State of Texas by lethal injection at the Huntsville Unit in Huntsville on September 21, 2011, and was pronounced dead at 6:21 p.m. according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and NBC News. He made no final statement, and his parents watched through a nearby window as he took several deep breaths and closed his eyes. A sister of James Byrd Jr. said she hoped the execution would show the harm racial hatred causes. Several later articles repeat that he declined a requested final meal, an episode they say led Texas to end the practice of special last meals.
