Lawrence Gutierrez, 49, died on June 6, 2023, after being taken by ambulance from the Harris County Jail to a hospital. Court paperwork described him as diabetic. The sheriff's office did not issue a press release, and when a reporter first asked about the death it initially called the story inaccurate before confirming it by phone. Because he had been released from the jail before he died, the death is not being counted as an in-custody death, and the cause of death remains unclear.
