LaWanda Ward, 46, died at the Tulsa Municipal Jail on January 6, 2020, where she was being held. An incident report the city sent to the state jail inspector says she was found unresponsive in her cell that morning and was pronounced dead at a Tulsa hospital. The Tulsa Police Department opened an investigation and asked the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to look into the death. The cause of death is listed as undetermined.
