Larry Davis
Larry Davis, 41, was the youngest of 15 children, according to one account. He was stabbed to death on February 20, 2008, in the recreation yard at Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Wallkill, New York, where he was being held. A spokesman for the state prisons department, Erik Kriss, said he was stabbed repeatedly with a homemade metal blade during a recreation break, and that staff were in the yard when a fight broke out. State police arrested another man held at the prison and charged him with the killing, and an account of the death called the circumstances highly questionable because several correctional officers oversaw the yard, calling for a thorough independent investigation.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed; neglect alleged). State prisons spokesman Erik Kriss said another inmate was questioned and later charged, while the article calls the circumstances highly questionable because several correctional officers oversaw the yard and calls for a thorough independent investigation.
Reported by: Erik Kriss, spokesman for the state Department of Correctional Services (the agency that held him); State police (outside investigators); New York Times (reporters).
