L. H. Dial

died May 1, 1868 · Coryell County, Texas

L. H. Dial came to Gatesville, Texas, looking for his brother-in-law, W. H. Lee. On May 1, 1868, County Judge Wm. W. Allen had him held in the county jail, and no complaint was entered against him and the proceedings were not recorded. That night a mob, which the judge's statement said was supposed to be the Ku-Klux, took him from the jail and hanged him from a tree. An investigating officer's report questions the judge's handling of the confinement and suspects the sheriff's involvement in the killings in Coryell County.
