Kyle Shaw
Kyle Shaw, 36, died at the Oklahoma County Detention Center in Oklahoma City on February 13, 2022. Staff found him in his cell while serving breakfast, and EMSA pronounced him dead at 5:34 a.m. The Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later said he died of a fentanyl overdose, and a toxicology report obtained by KFOR listed fentanyl toxicity as the cause and an accident as the manner. His brother sued the county, alleging the jail was negligent; a judge found jail staff acted with deliberate indifference to the safety of people held there, and the Oklahoma County Jail Trust and county commissioners settled the case for $55,000.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (neglect alleged). The Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled he died of a fentanyl overdose, and his brother's lawsuit alleges the jail was negligent, a claim a judge partly upheld by finding jail staff acted with deliberate indifference to inmates' safety.
Reported by: Oklahoma County Detention Center (jail administrator Greg Williams) (the agency that held him); Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (medical examiner or coroner); his brother's lawsuit (family or their lawyers); judge in the lawsuit.
Lawsuit: His brother sued Oklahoma County over the jail's negligence; a judge partially dismissed the suit in 2024 but found jail staff acted with deliberate indifference, and the county settled for $55,000.
