Kurtis Peoples, 46, of Gary, Indiana, died on December 11, 2018, after he was found alone in a shower cell at the Lake County Jail in Crown Point. Jail staff found him, and Crown Point EMS was called but declared him dead. The Porter County coroner's office, brought in to avoid a conflict of interest, investigated; the sheriff's office said foul play was not suspected. The coroner later ruled the death natural, from acute peritonitis caused by a ruptured duodenal ulcer, though the first reports listed the manner as pending toxicology results.
