Kristina Fiebrink

38 years old · died August 28, 2016 · Milwaukee County Correctional Facility, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin

Kristina Fiebrink, 38, died on August 28, 2016, in her cell at the Milwaukee County Jail, where she had been held since August 24. Her family says she was very caring and loving, and that her grandchildren will miss her. A federal civil rights lawsuit brought by her estate and children says she arrived suffering from heroin and alcohol withdrawal, was never medically screened, and was vomiting, hallucinating and in severe distress, and that her cries for help were ignored before she was found unresponsive on the cell floor. The lawsuit says her death was preventable and names jail officials, staff of the health care contractor Armor Correctional Health Services, and the insurers. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office has shared few details about how or why she died, and her family has called for an independent investigation.

Cause of death, as reported: Died from neglect by staff (disputed). Her family's attorney and a federal civil rights lawsuit by her estate and children say she was never medically screened and was not treated for heroin and alcohol withdrawal, and that her cries for help were ignored before she was found unresponsive; the Sheriff's Office has released few details, and her family has called for an independent investigation.

Reported by: Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held her); federal civil rights lawsuit by her estate and children; attorney James Gende (family or their lawyers); medical monitor's report; fellow inmates.

Lawsuit: Her family sued in federal court over her death at the Milwaukee County Jail, alleging inadequate care for alcohol and heroin withdrawal, and no settlement or award amount has been reported.
