Kristian Culver

died May 30, 2016 · Jack Harwell Detention Center, McLennan County, Texas

Kristian Culver died on May 30, 2016, while held at the Harwell Detention Center, a jail in Waco run by LaSalle, according to a report from the Texas Attorney General's office. A Texas Rangers investigative report found that he died by hanging in his cell and classified the death as a suicide. Surveillance showed that no one checked on him for more than two hours, although the jail required checks every 30 minutes. A jailer told investigators the shift was short-staffed and that he was told to fill in logs for checks that had not been made, and a grand jury declined to indict that jailer.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (neglect alleged). A Texas Rangers report found Harwell Detention Center staff did not check on Culver for more than two hours despite a 30-minute check requirement, and a jailer told investigators he was told to backfill the logs.

Reported by: Texas Rangers investigative report (outside investigators); McLennan County Sheriff's Department (the agency that held him).
