Kirch Freeman
Kirch Freeman was held at the jail in Winton, North Carolina, on the night of December 23, 1890. According to a dispatch from Aulander printed in the Norfolk Landmark, about 180 masked men surrounded the building, and three of them, with a fourth bound, told the jailer they had a prisoner to lock up; when he opened the door, he was overpowered. The News and Observer gave a different account, saying about thirty masked men forced the jailer to surrender his keys and then hanged Freeman in his cell, and the papers disagree on how the mob got in and how many took part. Freeman was found hanging there the next morning when the sheriff arrived, and the jailer was found bound and gagged.
