Kid Wade
Reports from February 1884 name the man as Kid Ware or Kid Wade, and the name was never confirmed. According to an Omaha dispatch, the Brown County sheriff in Nebraska had taken him from vigilantes and planned to transport him by train toward O'Neill. A mob then took him from the sheriff and hanged him, and a freight train conductor found a body hanging from a whistling post about a mile and a half east of Bassett on the morning of February 7. The body was only supposed to be his, and a later dispatch said he had not been hanged when a traveler left the area, so what happened to him remains disputed.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). Omaha dispatch reports a mob took Kid Wade from the sheriff and hanged him, while a later dispatch says he had not been hanged when a traveler left the area, and the body found near Bassett was only supposed to be Wade.
