Kevin Wayne Brinsley

19 years old · died June 8, 2006 · Talbot County Detention Center, Talbot County, Maryland

Kevin Wayne Brinsley, 19, was held at the Talbot County Detention Center in Easton, Maryland, when he died on June 8, 2006. His mother, Barbara Nash, said she had warned jail employees that he was suicidal and that they should have removed his belt before locking him in a holding cell. The sheriff's office said he died by hanging with a belt, that he had been left alone for 29 minutes before paramedics were called, and it cited stress in describing the death. The sheriff's office and investigators said reviews of the death were under way when the case was reported in August 2006.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). Officials say Brinsley hanged himself with a belt in a holding cell; his mother, Barbara Nash, says she warned jail employees he was suicidal and they should have removed his belt before locking him in the cell.

Reported by: Sheriff Dallas Pope and Lt. Rob Garber of the Talbot County sheriff's office (the agency that held him); Barbara Nash, his mother (family or their lawyers).
