Kevin Desir
Kevin Desir, 43, was a loving father to two young daughters and a full-time insurance broker, and his mother described him as sweet, loving and caring. He was held at the North Broward Bureau jail in Pompano Beach, Florida, where, after a physical altercation with deputies, he was restrained in a chair; reporting says a deputy held his neck for more than three minutes, and he became unresponsive. He died in hospital on 27 January 2021. The Broward County medical examiner could not determine the cause or manner of death, while a private autopsy commissioned by the family concluded he died of manual strangulation in a homicide, and the sheriff's office has said deputies were trying to treat his injuries; the state attorney declined to prosecute any officers, and the family is still seeking the jail surveillance video.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff (disputed). The county medical examiner could not determine the cause or manner of death, while the family's private autopsy by Dr Daniel Schultz concluded manual strangulation and homicide.
Reported by: Broward County Medical Examiner's Office (medical examiner or coroner); Dr Daniel Schultz, private autopsy commissioned by the family (medical examiner or coroner); Kevin Desir's family (family or their lawyers).
