Kevin Bailey died on June 1, 2023, in a Columbus hospital from injuries he suffered in an incident at the Scioto County Jail in late May. A jail spokesman said he struck his head on a door during a scuffle with guards. His sister, Karen Skaggs, said he had a fractured skull, broken ribs and a black eye, and that multiple sources say he was beaten and kicked. The sheriff later acknowledged to the family that an assault occurred, and a deputy was fired; the case has been referred to the prosecutor after a state investigation.
