Kevin

died 2018 · South Carolina

Kevin, a man who had chronic schizophrenia, died in a South Carolina county jail in 2018. His brother Derrick described him as a gentle giant and says he still struggles with his brother's time behind bars. A judge had ordered an evaluation of Kevin's competency to stand trial, but it never took place, and he died the next day. An autopsy attributed his death to a small bowel obstruction and found he had eaten part of his mattress. Detention records show that staff used pepper spray, a Taser, a restraint chair and isolation on him.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (neglect alleged). The autopsy attributed his death to a small bowel obstruction after he ate part of his mattress, and a court-ordered competency evaluation for him never took place.

Reported by: autopsy.
