Kevil Wingo
Kevil Wingo, a father of three, died on September 29, 2019, while held at the Cobb County jail in Georgia. His family and attorney say he spent hours in the jail infirmary complaining of severe abdominal pain and trouble breathing, begging to be taken to a hospital, and that staff did not act. The Cobb County Sheriff's Office said he suffered a medical emergency in his cell and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, and its internal reviews found no criminal negligence or policy violations. The medical examiner attributed his death to a perforated ulcer, and his family says timely medical attention could have saved him.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (neglect alleged). The medical examiner attributed the death to a perforated or ruptured ulcer, and the family's lawyer says staff ignored his repeated pleas for hospital care during hours of severe abdominal pain in the infirmary.
Reported by: Cobb County medical examiner (medical examiner or coroner); Wingo family's lawyer Timothy Gardner (family or their lawyers); Equal Justice Initiative (advocates).
