Died in custody
Ketchum
Ketchum was in the custody of the Custer County sheriff and his posse on Tuesday night, December 10, 1878, when a mob of about twenty-five armed, masked men took him from them. According to newspaper accounts, the mob tied Ketchum to a tree and burned him to death together with another man. One paper's account says the men had been accused of stealing stock, a charge the sources do not establish. The Fulton Journal and the Daily Dispatch both report the killing, though the Daily Dispatch gives the other man's name only as Mitchell.
