Kenneth Eugene Smith was executed in Alabama in January 2024, the first person put to death by nitrogen gas. An earlier attempt to execute him by lethal injection was called off when executioners ran out of time to set a second IV line before his death warrant expired. The execution was then carried out by nitrogen hypoxia.
