Keith Neal

43 years old · died November 26, 2014 · Washington Corrections Center, Mason County, Washington

Keith Neal, 43, was recognized the day before his death for his work as a teaching assistant and in the TOPS transition program at the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton. That night he wrote letters, one of which complained about a lack of mental health treatment. He was found unresponsive in his cell the next morning, the day before Thanksgiving 2014, and the Washington Department of Corrections said he had cut his arm and bled overnight, a death it classed as suicide. Staff said he seemed among the least likely people there to be at risk of suicide, and his letter about untreated mental health needs was written the night before.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (neglect alleged). The Washington Department of Corrections says Keith Neal cut his arm and bled out overnight, and a second account says he had written letters that night complaining about a lack of mental health treatment, and staff said he seemed among the least likely to be at risk of suicide.

Reported by: Washington Department of Corrections (the agency that held him). The only account of how this person died comes from the agency that held him.
