Keaton Farris
Keaton Farris was 25 and from Lopez Island, according to his father, Fred Farris, who said the family did not know what was happening inside the Island County jail until it was too late. He had a mental illness, according to KOMO, and was held at the jail in Coupeville for about two weeks before he died in April 2015. The county coroner determined he died of dehydration with malnutrition. A family claim alleged that guards placed him in isolation, barely monitored him and left him without enough water, and an investigation reported that officers turned off the water to his cell and that two guards falsely logged checks in the hours before his death.
Cause of death, as reported: Died from neglect by staff (disputed). The county coroner ruled the death natural from dehydration with malnutrition, while the family's attorney says guards left him without enough water, placed him in isolation with little monitoring, and falsified logs.
Reported by: county coroner; family's attorney (family or their lawyers); investigation after the death.
