Kay

Ouachita Parish, Louisiana

Kay was held in the jail at Monroe, Louisiana, in June 1894, a time when a series of fires had stirred the town. A crowd of several hundred broke into the jail, took him out and walked him to a tree, according to a dispatch from Little Rock, Ark., citing messenger Aronson. The dispatch says he was allowed to put the rope around his own neck and jump, after which the crowd dispersed, and it calls the death a self-execution. The account itself describes a mob that took him from the jail and hanged him.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A newspaper dispatch from Little Rock, Ark., citing messenger Aronson, says a crowd of several hundred broke into the Monroe, La., jail, took Kay out and hanged him, and the dispatch's own label calls it a self-execution.
