Kare Randall
Kare Randall, 25, was described by his brother Joshua Sesay as a quiet, creative man who protected his family and friends, and his mother, Latoya Earles, said he called her the night before he died to tell her he loved her. He died at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, Maine, on April 21, 2024, and jail staff said they found him hanging in his cell; Maine State Police said the death was a suicide. His mother's lawsuit against several Maine counties, the jail's medical contractor and jail officials says he had attempted suicide earlier that month, that he told people on jail calls and the jail tablet he planned to harm himself, and that they were deliberately indifferent to his mental health needs. Jail officials said he was in general population housing and not under emergency supervision, and the defendants deny responsibility.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). Jail staff and Maine State Police call it an apparent suicide by hanging, while his mother's wrongful death lawsuit says jail failures and deliberate indifference to his mental health needs after an earlier suicide attempt contributed to his death.
Reported by: Two Bridges Regional Jail staff (the agency that held him); Maine State Police spokesman Shannon Moss (outside investigators); Latoya Earles's wrongful death lawsuit (family or their lawyers); his family.
Lawsuit: His mother, Latoya Earles, sued several Maine counties, the jail's medical contractor and jail officials over his death, and the defendants deny responsibility.
