Kalena "Peaches" Croskey
Kalena "Peaches" Croskey, 32, was a Black transgender woman from Birmingham. Friends and the TAKE Resource Center said she brought light, laughter and joy into every space, sang Beyoncé songs, vogued, created makeup looks, and showed resilience after years of being unhoused. She died at the Birmingham City Jail on June 11, 2026, where she had been held since April 21. The mayor said she had earlier attempted self-harm in custody and that the Jefferson County Coroner's Office found no foul play and ruled the death a suicide, while other early reports said the cause and manner were still pending. Friends said conditions at the jail were poor, and police were investigating the death.
