Kaleb Smith
Kaleb Smith, 27, died on August 31, 2022, and was pronounced dead at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston, Missouri, after being held at South Central Correctional Center. He was one of four people housed at the prison who died within a week, according to the Springfield News-Leader. The Texas County Coroner, Marie Lasater, later attributed his death to a fentanyl overdose, reporting a fentanyl level about seven times the lethal level and saying a recreational level of meth likely did not contribute, per FOX 2. A KY3 report said the coroner attributed a group of deaths at the prison, including this one, to fentanyl toxicity, the first such deaths seen there that year.
