Justin Stieb
Justin Stieb, 37, had a seizure disorder that his mother said began when he was fifteen; she said she was with him at nearly every seizure and that he did not like to be alone. He had several seizures over one day at the Delta County Detention Facility, where he was placed in a cell that, according to the family's lawsuit, staff were supposed to monitor by camera, and he died there on August 16, 2014. The autopsy report lists natural causes, but the family's lawsuit disputes that account, pointing to edited video with unexplained time gaps and a roughly twenty-minute delay before deputies entered the cell. His wife, Tamara Knob, wants to know how long he was in the cell and whether staff tried to check on him.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed; neglect alleged). The autopsy report lists natural causes, but his family's lawsuit says staff failed to monitor him by camera and waited about twenty minutes before entering his cell, and that edited video has unexplained gaps.
Reported by: autopsy report; his family's lawsuit (family or their lawyers).
Lawsuit: His family sued Delta County and its jail staff over his death, and the sources report no settlement or award amount.
