Justin Hammons
According to his mother, Justin Hammons was a son, a father, a big brother, and a grandson, and he had lifelong friends in his home area. He died on March 20, 2024, the day he was booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center in Gaffney, South Carolina. His mother has filed a lawsuit saying deputies placed him in a full-body restraint and used a Taser on him, then moved him to a visitation cell without a medical screening or continuous monitoring. The lawsuit says the restraints impeded staff's attempts to resuscitate him. Court documents list methamphetamine toxicity as the cause of death, and the sheriff's office declined to comment on the pending litigation.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (disputed; neglect alleged). His mother's lawsuit attributes his death to methamphetamine toxicity, and says deputies restrained and tased him and staff moved him to a visitation cell without medical screening or continuous monitoring.
Reported by: Hammons' mother and her lawsuit (family or their lawyers).
Lawsuit: His mother filed a lawsuit against Cherokee County and its detention center over his death, and no settlement or award amount has been reported.
