Juan Carlos Chavez
Juan Carlos Chavez, 46, was executed by lethal injection at Florida State Prison in Raiford on February 12, 2014, and was pronounced dead at 8:17 p.m. In a written statement, he said he had found forgiveness in his religious faith and was not afraid of death, and his spiritual adviser was the only visitor he had that day. His lawyers challenged Florida's three-drug lethal injection method and the handling of his clemency hearings; the Florida Supreme Court rejected a last-minute challenge to the new method, and the U.S. Supreme Court reviewed and rejected a final appeal, delaying the execution by more than an hour. The Florida Department of Corrections lists the manner of death as homicide.
