Joshua Williams
Joshua L. Williams, 20, grew up in Jacksonville, and his mother, Carolyn Green, describes him as a loved son whom the family still misses. He was held at Hardee Correctional Institution, a Florida state prison, where two other people held there stabbed him in October 2013, and he died at a hospital on October 23, 2013. His mother says staff waited too long to call 911 and that he bled to death in the yard, and the family and their attorney, Robert Slama, are asking a grand jury to consider charges against staff. A news report says video shows staff trying to help him before the ambulance arrived, and the Florida Department of Corrections lists the manner of death as homicide.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed; neglect alleged). The Florida Department of Corrections recorded the death as a homicide, while his mother, Carolyn Green, says staff waited too long to call 911 and he bled to death in the yard.
Reported by: Florida Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); family and their attorney Robert Slama (family or their lawyers); Inspector General's report (outside investigators).
