Joshua Jenkins

33 years old · died April 15, 2018 · Lee Correctional Institution, Lee County, South Carolina

Joshua Jenkins died on April 15, 2018, when fighting broke out at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, South Carolina, and continued for more than seven hours across several housing units. Seven men died in the violence, and Lee County Coroner Larry Logan ruled Jenkins's death a homicide caused by blood loss from multiple stab and incised wounds. Prosecutors have said that a group of men chased rival gang members outside into the rain, cornered them against a razor-wire fence and stabbed them, while the defense has described the violence as a fight among gang members rather than a planned attack. Bakari Sellers, the attorney representing Jenkins's estate, has said the state's underfunding of the prison system contributed to the deaths.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). The Lee County coroner ruled his death a homicide from blood loss from multiple stab and incised wounds, prosecutor Creighton Waters said rival prisoners killed him in the breezeway, and his estate's lawyer, Bakari Sellers, says the state's underfunding of the prison system contributed to the deaths.

Reported by: Lee County Coroner Larry Logan (medical examiner or coroner); Attorney General's Office prosecutor Creighton Waters (outside investigators); South Carolina Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); Bakari Sellers, lawyer for his estate (family or their lawyers).
