Joshua Dewayne Files was from Bessemer, Alabama, and was taken to the Shelby County Jail on June 6, 2023. On June 12 he was moved to a special housing cell, and on June 15 he was found in a medical emergency during a safety check. He was taken to a hospital, where he died around 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 17. The state forensic department was to perform an autopsy, and the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office investigated what happened in the days before he was found.
