Executed
Joseph Williams
Joseph Williams was taken from the jail in Marion and hanged there on April 10, 1829, according to a report from Macon, Georgia, carried by the Daily National Intelligencer. That report said he was calm on the way to the gallows and drank whiskey beneath it. It also said that as the drop fell he drew up his legs, so the hanging did not break his neck. A few days before his execution, he had tried to take his own life with laudanum, but the report said he could not keep the dose down.
Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state
