Joseph Vermillion

died December 3, 1889 · Prince George's County Correctional Center, Prince Georges County, Maryland

Joseph Vermillion was held in the Upper Marlboro Jail in Prince George's County, Maryland, awaiting trial. According to a December 4, 1889 New-York Tribune dispatch, about fifty masked men came to the jailer's house in the early morning of December 3, demanded the jail keys, and broke the locks when the jailer refused. The paper reported that the mob struck him on the head, took him to an iron bridge near the village, and hanged him from a girder, and that his body was cut down at daylight. The account rests on this single newspaper report, and the number of attackers is as the dispatch gave it.
