Jason Sanford, 41, was kind-hearted and would help anyone in need, according to his brother, who spoke with him by phone every night after Sanford moved to Florida four years earlier. He died in April 2024, hours after arriving at the Clayton County Jail in Georgia. Reporting on the case says he told staff he was in pain and was placed alone in an isolation room, where staff did not enter for about 15 minutes after he stopped moving. The Clayton County Sheriff's Office says he had a medical emergency, passed an initial medical exam, and then complained of back and wrist pain less than an hour later, and it has notified the medical examiner and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. His family says the jail has not given them answers and wants accountability.
Cause of death, as reported: Cause not yet determined (neglect alleged). The sheriff's office says Jason Sanford had a medical emergency and became unresponsive, with the medical examiner's ruling pending; the reporting says staff did not enter his isolation room for about 15 minutes after he stopped moving.
Reported by: Clayton County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); news reporting on jail accounts.
