Executed
Joseph S. Bowers
Joseph S. Bowers, 45, was executed on August 26, 1830, by the U.S. marshal for the Territory of Arkansas. He was taken from the jail under a small military escort, and a clergyman led religious exercises at the place of execution. Before his death he said his parents, brothers and sisters in Chillicothe, Ohio, would suffer disgrace because of it. The account describes him as cool and resolute, and says he died after the cap was drawn over his face and the cart was driven out from under him.
