Joseph O'Kane

43 years old · died April 25, 2010 · U.S. Penitentiary Canaan, Waymart, Pennsylvania

Joseph O'Kane was 43. His sister, Marie Lanza, said he was her best friend, called or emailed her every day, especially on weekends, and never took off his gold cross. He was found fatally stabbed in his cell at USP Canaan, a federal prison in Waymart, Pennsylvania, on April 25, 2010. Prison sources, as reported, said another person admitted the killing and that a second person took his gold cross and watch. Five months later no one had been charged, and his sister said the Bureau of Prisons and the FBI had each pointed to the other's investigation; she says she needs to know what happened and whether he could have been saved.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed). Prison sources say another inmate admitted the killing, and his sister Marie Lanza says the Bureau of Prisons and the FBI have each pointed to the other's investigation without charges being filed.

Reported by: Prison sources (the agency that held him); Marie Lanza (family or their lawyers); Gang Land (reporters).
